Blue Whale Children's Dentistry of Hawaii

Came to this dentist for a second opinion. I appreciated his up-to-date (at the time) knowledge. He did not take my insurance so I paid out of pocket, and it was very difficult to get a clear answer on costs. Ended up being well over what they estimated. But my low review is because I specifically and clearly asked the dentist to not lie to my child, that my child does much better with honesty, like don't say they won't feel a thing when they will, for example. This dentist totally lied to my child, telling her that he had not yet extracted her tooth when he in fact had. She was crying and distressed and he still wouldn't tell her the truth. She kept saying, "Did you already take the tooth out?" and he kept saying he hadn't, only to surprise her later with the fact that he indeed had, which only made her hate him. This was years ago but she remembers it to this day and will often say to me, "Do you remember that terrible dentist who lied to me? Why did he do that, and why did you just stand there and say nothing?" Horrible experience.

Best experience ever! My 2 year old son fell and cracked a tooth on his first day of school but I didn’t get a call from the school until hours later. Dr Gavin saw us that night, after hours. The tooth was cracked in the bone and I was worried we would have to pull it, but with some local anesthetic and some calming music Dr Gavin saved the tooth. Simply amazing! The cracked tooth fell out naturally 4 years later with the adult tooth coming in beautifully, unharmed. Extremely caring, very knowledgeable professional, and very good with communication. We don’t have insurance, and the service was first class and worth every penny. Highly recommended for anyone wanting personalized service and expertise.

I had heard amazing things about this office and decided to bring my almost 2 year old daughter for her first dental visit while we were visiting. I am SO glad I did! The entire experience was stress free but most importantly very informative! Dr. Gavin is magic with kids. My daughter was freaked out when we got there but got so comfortable she literally didn't want to leave after her appointment. He was able to examine her and give us practical tips on how to take the best care of her tiny teeth. Turns out she has a lip tie, he explained what it is and what it means in really clear terms and we have an action plan in place. I wish he treated adults!!

We are so happy to have found Blue Whale Dentistry for our kids! We feel that Dr. Uchida really cares about his patients and does what is best for them rather than pushing unnecessary procedures. This is opposite of what we have experienced in the past. I like it that Dr. Uchida takes time to teach my kids about the importance of dental hygiene in a way they will actually listen! My kids actually don't dread going to the dentist since they have become patients here and they feel very comfortable with the dentist and staff. We've recommended Blue Whale already to many of our friends.

My son likes the dentist a lot. He is always looking forward to seeing the fish and picking a toy from the cabinet. Plus the density is pretty good at chatting with our son, so it's nice that he feels comfortable in this situation.

I cannot say enough good comments about this office, and Dr Gavin Uchida. This office really is a totally different experience from any other dentist office I've been to. Its a personal experience not only for my kids, but also for me. The dentist and the staff all are very friendly, and they talk and interact with me and my kids almost like we are family. The office itself is new, and CLEAN and beautiful. Its very open, and I was completely at ease during the entire checkup visit. I'm used to dental visits for my kids involving long waits, possibly rude staff people, and vague or confusing explanation of what was going on with my kids teeth. Both Dr Gavin and the hygienist explained everything very well, and were fast and on time. A bonus is that this office uses safe dental materials and anesthetics. Good for parents who understand health and wellness.
